I Will Not Surrender:
An Essay About A Song By Mayday Parade and The Tempest.
1)I am not invincible but I am strong. 2) I am not expecting anything but I am hoping. 3) I love to live but for some reason people wish to change that. 4) I must fight back.
TS)"I'm standing here alone trying to make this life my own and nothing will keep this heart from beating I'm still breathing." Sings Mayday Parade.SD) When Mayday Parade sings this line in there song "Still Breathing" I get a calm feeling, I get a formation of a smile, I get hope.  CM) This song reminds me that I am not the only one going through these difficult obstacles life throws in my path. CM) When I feel alone and lost, like nobody can relate, I remember the words to this song. SD) In this song they are explaining that no matter the situation you have to hold on to hope and faith. CM) He says "'Cause I've seen a bigger picture and I'm looking for some answers", by this he means that he knows what its like to be happy but he doesn't understand why he cant be happy all of the time. CM) This same question races through my mind every time i'm in an unwanted position. SD) "Time's racing (Please slow down) I got to find my way out I'm hopeless (But hoping) my lungs won't fail me now 'cause I'm still breathing." CM) This is when he explains that he knows he can get through it. CM) Even if all the forces are working against him, he can do it. CM) The question is, does he want to? CS) This song is special to me because when my parents or the teachers don't understand it sometimes feels as if they try to make my life more difficult by doing different things, and I know i'm not the only one who gets this feeling when I listen to this song.
TS) Prospero could benefit from hearing this song. SD) He has had many things taken away from him and he has been pushed out into the open sea with a child expected to die. CM) He is still breathing. CM) He is still alive, and better than ever because he now has his brother on his land and Prospero will take advantage of the situation. SD) His brother took away his land before but now it is time for prospero’s revenge. CM) In the song “Still Breathing” he talks about how people are always trying to bring him down but it wont work this time because he is expecting it. CM) Prospero is in the same situation, this has happened before to him but this time he knows what he an do you that in the end he has the advantage. SD) Although people expect prospero to be dead I have a feeling they wont be surprised when he isn’t because of his love about reading books about magic. CM)  In the song they talk about how people expect you to shrivel in the face of hatred, but they also expect you to fight against it. CM) This is the strange thing we call human nature. CS) Prospero, Mayday  Parade, and I are all grasping for dignity and we wont stop until we achieve our goal.
1)I am what ever I want to be. 2) I must live up to my standards, not anybody else’s. 3) I am not alone in this fight. 4) It is the battle that everyone must fight.

1. One writing issue I am continuing to work on:Correctness, I am still working on my correcting skills.

2. One strong point I see in this piece of writing: Grabbing the readers attention. I feel I do a good job grabbing the readers attention with my TS's and opening and closing paragraphs.

3. One possible weak point I see:Unity, maybe I could try to connect my SD's better. The unity in this writing is ok but I feel it could be better.

Sometimes the meaning of a poem, song, or piece of literature’s meaning is hidden.  It is almost as if an author puts gold into a poem, song, or piece of literature’s.You have to dig deeper to understand what is the author implies.
Have you ever been ashamed of something? I feel that the message the author is trying to get across in the poem OZYMANDIAS by Percy Bysshe Shelley is that you cannot truly hide something. The author is talking about how he found a piece of artwork in the desert almost as if someone tried to hide it. The author read a message that was intended for the few that would ever read it. The saying that you can run but you cannot hide comes into play when I read this poem. Whoever was trying to hide this artwork did not succeed but only prevented from more to see. Eventually most things are found. While reading this poem I was trying to figure out why someone would hide their artwork. Was it not up to the standards of the maker? Or was someone jealous and hid it from the maker himself? Either way whoever tried to hide it, failed.
In the second poem WRITTEN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS by Matthew Arnold I believe that the message is that many things go unnoticed. He says that "here is peace for ever new" but he makes it seem as if he is the only one who actually sees it. He is saying in complex language throughout the poem that if people just opened there eyes and actually cared and believed then this world would be such a better place. Instead people shun anything that they might think of as 'abnormal'. He also says in the poem that a grown up is not the only person who endures work but a child does also, whether its school or trying to fix a toy a child's job is to learn new things and that, like grown up jobs, can be a difficult and frustrating job. He brings up birds quite a bit also. I feel he does this because birds can resemble peace, and most people don't see the magnificence of birds. Such beautiful creatures making such beautiful sound, is actually a fascinating subject. All in all Mathew Arnold saw the side of things that others didn't.
You cant just read something once and expect to understand it. You have to look into the meaning behind the words. If you keep a good eye then you will find more than expected.

My Winter Wonder Land:
A Story About Winter

Winter air is so refreshing, so pure, so cold. There is nothing better than walking outside on a cold winter morning and taking a deep breath in. Sometimes it's almost as if all your problems flee with that one breath. The cold air takes over your body and an exhilarating feeling rushes into your pores. In an instant you feel at one with the birds, animals, and earth around you. The winter wonderland around you enhances you.

My winter wonderland consists of my back yard, snow, and a gray sky. White crystals falling from above. Ever since I was a little girl I have found something magical about the winter time. Skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, snow shoeing, ice fishing, making a snow man, sledding and many more things are able to take place just because white powder is on the ground.
For me there is nothing like running around in the snow with a tank top and shorts on. Some might find this action a little strange but it wakes me up and refreshes my sumer blown mind. I love sticking my toes in and rolling around in that freezing white puffy powder so imperfectly placed on the ground. In the instance my body goes numb, and I run inside and sit in front of the warm cozy fire. As the hot chocolate pours down my esophagus and drips into my stomach my body is then again filled with heat only making me want to do it one more time.
Although summer is my favorite season I can appreciate winter. I appreciate all winter because it  allows mother earth to be reborn.  Some people never get to experience snow, new get to ski down a mountain, and never get to go sledding, this is why I never take my winter time for granted. Who knows maybe one day there will be no winter. Winter is the season that holds many holidays, delays and snow days. Winter also holds many wonders, making a winter wonder land.

My Beautiful White Horse:
An Essay About What Relaxes Me.

1)If I receive a bad grade, when a friend and I argue, when my parents yell at me, if my dog chews on a pair of my favorite shoes,  I get angry. 2)When I am filled with anger, and I am frustrated beyond belief, and I feel like there is no hope for a situation, when I need a way to get rid of that anger, I sing.

TS) What relieves your stress? SD) William Saroyan in "The Summer of the beautiful white horse" relieves his anger by riding a horse. CM) Saroyan is poor and he can escape the work that he has to face everyday when he rides that horse. CM) He knows that riding the stolen horse could result in others frowning upon his family name. SD) When Saroyan rides the horse it not only releases despair within him but it sets free anger within the horse also. CM) They both had a chance to stop thinking about situations at home, and just let their mind flow with the wind, and escape the actual situation. CM) Leaving "the horse [...] stronger than ever." SD) The relief both Saroyan and the horse felt  helped them work better with others. CM) Saroyan was not short tempered with his cousin who acted like he knew everything. CM) And the horse was "better tempered". CS) William Saroyan and the beautiful horse worked together to relieve their anger.

TS) When I sing, I feel as if peace flows throughout my veins. SD) It doesn't matter where, when, what, or why, but I find that singing releases anger for me no matter what the situation. CM) When frustrated about a problem I start humming because it's my way to cope with my problems CM) During a game, riding a four wheeler, skiing, snowmobiling, I sing and it feels like the stress is floating far away. SD) Like, when William Saroyan rides that horse, when I sing it brings me to a different place, and I feel as if I am no longer on the ground but I'm soaring high in the air. CM)  I've noticed that if I listen to music and hum along as I fall asleep or study, while I'm on my way to school, or  writing my own song, it helps me to stay on task. CM) Doctors might say it is a way of coping with my ADHD, but it's more about me working through my stress. CS) When I am about to cry, I sing, and it's almost as if the tear that was about to fall down my cheek dries immediately.

1)I am human, with faults and differences, with uncontrollable emotions. 2) I sing to let my emotions free, and without singing I have no idea where I would be.

1. One writing issue I am continuing to work on: My polishing skills, I need to work on taking a closer look at my essays before I call them 'done'.

2. One strong point I see in this piece of writing: I think that I have unity through out the essay.

3. One possible weak point I see: I may be to vague on some parts.

Any Questions:
An Inclass Essay About Questions.
1)Sometimes I wonder why certain things happen. 2) Like why did my dog die? 3) Why did my dad develop diabetes? 4) Some say I should search for the reason, but Rainer Maria Rilke in Letters to a Young Poet says live in the question and not care about the answer.

TS) It is not bad to question the obstacles you run into in life. SD) Rainer Maria Rilke says that you should “have patience with everything unresolved in your heart”. CM) James Baldwin in Notes of a Native Son talks about how much he hated his father when his father was alive but now he regrets not knowing his father now that he is deceased. CM) If Rilke could have talked to Baldwin while Baldwin was growing up, he would explain that Baldwins father was just trying to protect him and build him into a strong man. SD) William Manchester would also benefit from Rilkes advice. CM) Manchester wrote in Okinawa:Bloodiest Battle of All that the war he fought in was one of the worst wars of all.  CM) Manchester wondered why such horrible things existed and Rilke would have answered “Dont search for the answers, which could not be given to you now”, meaning that somethings just don’t have an explanation. SD) Zora Neale Hurston in How it Feels to Be Colored Me would agree with Rilke when he says “Live the questions now.Perhaps [...] you will [...] live your way into the answer” CM) Mrs.Hurston talks about how she will not dwell on herself because she is colored but she will only see it as an opportunity to prove that there is more to a colored person then their skin. CM) They both feel that asking questions will only get you part way there but if you delve for the answers in your life then you will succeed. CS) Baldwin, Manchester, Hurston, and Rilke all have unanswered questions but Rilke says that is something that you should cherish because some of the answers are painful.

1) “I would like to beg you” to understand the point of view that Rilke is coming from. 2) Life itself is an unanswered question. 3) Why look for the answers that will only hurt you? 4) Just stop, and think about what is happening now, not about why something else isn’t happening.

Proud Native American:
An Essay about What Is Important to Me.

Around 400 years ago, a conflict started between my ancestors, members of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe, and the English. Blood was shed, homes torn to the ground, lives and land taken away. It all started when the Narragansets killed Captain John Stone on Block Island. The English were outraged and wanted to get even immediately. When the Narraganset were confronted, they blamed my ancestors. The English attacked, and killed all the warriors on the island and took around  200 woman and children as prisoners. This caused tension in Mystic and eventually evolved into the Pequot War (Some people called it a war, Pequots called it a massacre.). Either way, if it was up to the English, especially John Mason, who killed most of the warriors, there would not be Mashantuckets around today.
The tribe and my culture are vital to me. Since I was six months old, my elders have been surrounding me with information about my culture. One of the most important things for me is passing along my culture. The children of my tribe don't know that most of our culture is not written in a book. It is up to us to keep our culture going. On the reservation we think of everyone as close family, and my family is the most important thing in my life. My ancestors fought for me and gave there lives for me. The last thing I am going todo is watch my culture slowly fade away. Last week there was an inauguration on the reservation. The inauguration welcomed my 1st cousin Crystal Whipple and my 1st cousin Steven Thomas into tribal council. At the inauguration, like every other tribal gathering, the “flag song” was sung.(see video above) Almost every tribal member knows that song. They may not know the exact translation, but they know the meaning. They know it represents our freedom and what it took to get our freedom. While singing along with the drums I look around, I see 5 year olds, 17 year olds, and even 65 year olds singing, not because the are forced to or because it's polite, because it's important to them. Not only do I love my tribe, but I love helping my tribe because I feel that it is very important to give back to something that has given me so many opportunities. My tribe was supposed to be wiped off the face of the earth but my ancestors fought and fought to keep our culture alive. Nothing stopped us then, and nothing will stop us now, and I will make sure of it.

Shylia ran down the dirt road, her hair flowing with the wind, her boots sloshing in the slush, her cheeks red from the cold, her pants torn from a branch, the leaves crinkling with each step, the animals hidding as she ran by, the trees swaying from side to side, the nature around her responding to every move she made.

Life On The Road:
An Essay About My Busy Life.

I need a break. I love living on the run but it would be nice if I had time to stop, breathe, and seize the moment. Rushing to make every appointment, game, and social event on time really takes a toll on a person. My schedule is so full I barley have enough time to just think. This is called in E. M. Forster's mind is called living on the road.

TS)  Whats side of the hedge are you on? SD)In E. M. Forster's "The Other Side of the Hedge," he lives on the road, always moving never stopping to take a breath or help somebody. CM) The people on his side only care about themselves. CM)They never lend a helping hand, they just shame on him for taking a break. SD) He was longing to see what was on the other side was like. CM) At first when he got to the other side, which was a painful journey, he looked around and saw no one in a hurry. CM) He soon figured out that the other side had no rush or competition, so everyone worked together. CS) Now that he knew how significant the other side of the hedge is he had a better understanding of life.

TS) Its a tough life always living on the road. SD) I am on the road 24/7. CM) Basketball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Teal, Homework, my social life, and work can at times become overwhelming.  CM) Although its less overwhelming during the summer, I never really get a break. SD) Every now and then I realize that my life on the road is catching up to me. CM) Sometimes I realise this to late and I crash. SD) I do wish that I could live on the otherside of the hedge, but I have way to many things that I am capable of doing to not live on the road. CM) I love every activity I do but at times its imposible for me to have a social life out side of school hourse because of homework. CM) The main reason why I crash is because I try and fit in a social life where there is absolutely no room. CS) As for now, I live on the road, hopefully someday I can live on the other side of the hedge.

Although living on the road is difficult, it is a challenge that can be met. Living on the road can be a strength building experience. Living on the other side of the hedge helps you gain balance in your life. Which one is more important to you?

My Way To Success:
An Essay on N.Scott Momaday's Essay "The Way to Rainy Mountain"

1) We all travel a long Journey over a 100 years (more or less). 2) This is the Journey of life. 3) This journey is made important because of the small journeys that happen in the middle. 4) Some of the smaller journeys have more importance in the long run, N. Scott Momaday believes him and his people had a journey worth sharing in his essay "The Way to Rainy Mountain."

TS) How will you reach your goal? SD) N.Scott Momaday went on a long journey to reach his goal of learning more about his grandmothers unique culture so he could educate others about it.CM) His grandmothers death was the main reason he decided to visit his home land in Oklahoma, on the Kiowa reservation. CM)He traveled " fifteen hundred miles to begin [his] pilgrimage".SD) His ancestors had a very complex story that Momaday was now anxious to learn about. CM) His ancestors did not start off in Oklahoma, they started in the mountains of Montana. CM) Because they moved they had to adopt parts of the crows culture, therefore altering there's.SD) His grandmother, Aho, was a symbol to him that their culture was still alive. CM) With his grandmothers death came what he thought of as the loss of his culture. CM) He soon found out that he could pass on information that his grandma shared with him and that itself would keep his culture alive. CS) It took a long journey for Momaday to relize that one fallen petal doesn't kill the flower, its the neglectance to water the roots.

TS) Even though I still am young, I too have had to make a long journey. SD) As a Kindergartner I had trouble socializing, which started my bumpy road to loneliness. CM) I remember feeling alone and different. CM) I remember sitting by myself watching the others play, thinking something was wrong with me. SD) I would cry myself to sleep because I didn't want to be different, I wanted friends. CM) I never truley fit in untill the road started to become smoother, near the end of sixth grade. CM) But all of the years leading up to sixth grade were brutal and horrible. SD) It took a lot of time and test on my brain before I realized that I needed to work with my self, instead of agaisnt myself. CM) I had to except myself as being different. CM) Without that important journy I am not positive that I would be here today because I would have never realized that I could easily gain friends. CS) Although I traveled a lond and hard 7 year bumpy road, like N.Scott Momaday's journey, my journey had an everlasting impact on how I live my life.

1) A journey can be a very painful process or a easy enjoyable process. 2) Either way it will have importance in your life journey. 3) The road to success is very bumpy but if you want success it is a road you must travel. 4) Good luck on your journeys, may they be as smooth as possible.

The presence of anger:
An Essay About Maya Angelou's essay "I know why the caged bird sings"

1) What makes you angry? 2) Is it the lack of respect? 3) Or is it someone not accounting for your feelings? 4) Either way there is always one point in time when anger rushes through your veins faster than the blood itself, Maya Angelou and I have to try hard to express it in the correct manner.

TS) How do you express anger? SD) Maya Angelou in her essay ,"I know why the caged bird sings" , has a lot of anger that she has kept within herself overtime.CM) Her now built up anger is made up from many times of being treated as unequal. CM) She knows herself that she is no different from most of the white people, yet the color of their skin separates them.  SD) She is so angry that she wishes she wasn't the girl she is. CM) She saw herself with, " long and blond" in the place of the "kinky mass that [her Grandmother] wouldn't let her straighten". CM) She saw herself as a white girl. SD) The main reason why she wanted to be a "white girl" was because she was fed up. CM) She knew that she had a lot to offer. CM) But because she was black her thoughts and suggestions were not important, she was not important. CS) Her anger built up and built up until she started thinking dramatic thoughts like shooting someone.
TS) What someone else does can seriously impact your emotions. SD) One thing that always gets me upset is when someone flaunts or boasts about something don’t have. CM) It makes me feel as if the only point they are trying to get across is that they have something that I want and I will never get. CM) I have no idea why this frustrates me so much but it does.SD) Like Maya another person’s ignorance or rudeness also gets me angry. CM) It makes me mad enough to “throw a handful of black in” their face. CM) I know its alarming to most that I get so angry, but it only takes two seconds to use your manners so why do people choose not to. My Breaking Point:
An Essay on War and Death.

1) What's the point of war? 2) Its hard enough to face one death at a time. 3) As I know from the death of my Grandmother. 4) War's repetitive death, and i cant imagine how that would make one feel.

TS) It's hard to imagine what is going through a soldier's mind. SD) The pain that William Manchester describes in "Okinawa: 'The Bloodiest Battle of All'" only gives a minor description of what he actually saw. CM)He described the how he couldn't even sleep at night because of the horrifying sounds of death near by. CM) There was barley any room so everything was so cramped up. SD) Can you imagine being so close to so many people who haven't eaten used a proper toilet, or washed them self in days. CM) Imagine sleeping in someone Else's excretions. CM) Once you go through something like that you are less than likely to keep you sanity. SD) Sadly the war was the "central experience of [his] youth." CM) It had an everlasting impact on Mr.Manchester that I'm positive he wishes he could have left back at the war. CM) He is left with knowing what people still go through everyday. CS) Mr.Manchester shares this pain with many other veterans.

TS) My Grandmother's death was definitely a "central experience of [my] youth."SD) I can remember the night of her death as if it were yesterday. CM) I was over my brother's house because my parents had gone to visit her in the hospital. CM) I was naive of the situation and I thought it was just another opportunity to stay up late on a school night. SD) I can remember thinking that nothing bad could happen to her and that she would be out of the hospital in no time.CM) When it was time to settle down and go to sleep, I really started thinking about what would happen if she did die. CM) I thought that was less than likely to happen so I just quickly said a prayer for her. CM) I asked for someone to be watching over her while in the hospital and I asked to in someway let her know that I will always know her as the strong loving character she was.  SD) When my parents finally came to pick us up, we were asleep. CM) At first the car ride was silent, not one person saying a word. CM) I didn't think it was appropriate to ask how she was until I saw one tear slowly make its way down my father's cheek. SD) I knew then that something was wrong. CM) I asked my father how she was doing and he said in a quiet voice " Honey, your grandmother passed." CM) I didn't have a response and because Kiona was sleeping the whole car ride she didn't know, so I tried to hold my tears in until after my parents told her.CM) I ran into the bathroom and started crying harder than I have ever cried before. Once Kiona found out I went onto my bed a cried myself to sleep. Like Mr.Manchester's wound from his experience with war, this "wound will never heal". CS) I wish that my grandmother was sitting next to me right now, but as Mr. Manchester knows somethings just won't happen.

1)  We don't know what we have till It's gone. 2) In my case it's my Grandmother, and in Mr.Manchester's case it's his sanity. 3) Make sure you count your blessings. 4) Don't take anything for granted.
